Rose Rust

Rose rust is yet another fungal infection that can affect your plants.

Rose Rust

The good news is that this disease is not as common as some of the other fungi. Its found more often in climates where it is moist and cool, typically more of the northwest United States and Canada. The name rose rust comes from its appearance, which are ugly rust-colored spots on leaf bottoms. It some cases, you may get this on stems and canes as well. Left untreated, these spots will spread and blacken the plant, ultimately killing the leafs and foliage.

Although its mainly found in cool, damp climates, it can occur in any area with the right conditions. Fog or humid conditions can add to the risk, as can heavy rains. Leaves with the issues should be removed and destroyed immediately. Bugs and other critters can spread the fungus so don't put it in your compost pile. Use sulphur or other fungicide to treat the rest of the plant.

Proper watering and drainage of the roses can help control rust on roses and other fungi. Allowing air to dry the leaves properly will minimize the chance of fungus to grow. Good soil drainage will help keep the fungus out of the surrounding plants as well. Be sure to winterize your plants properly as well, as rust can form spores that can spread over the winter. Remove all infected areas prior to your winterization.
