Even in ancient times, people knew the value of roses in creating great scents. They were valuable and traded widely from the Middle East and Europe. Now, of course, most fragrances are made in factories, but the basic steps and ingredients remain the same. Perfumes are created in a process where crushed petals are steam distilled. This creates a water byproduct, which is also useful in many ways, and a small amount of oil. Very small! It takes 20,000 flowers just to make 10 grams of oil! The main ingredients that give the oil its fragrant properties are geraniol, citronellol, and terpenoids.

Most oil is now created in Bulgaria, with the rest coming from Germany and Iran. These areas are great breeding areas for damasks, which is the key source flower for rose perfume. You'll also see the rose geranium used for its oil.

French fragrances are made a little differently. Most of their products use the centifolia breeds. It is very popular for medical use, such as aromatherapy, and anxiety and depression treatment.
