A rose corsage is very popular for women at proms, or for a bride on her wedding day. The male counterpart to this is the rose boutonniere. It can be a single larger or several smaller flowers together. It can be attached to the clothing via pin or may be worn on the wrist with a flexible band. It should be worn on the left side with either type. Make sure to have the stem down and bloom up, so your corsage isn't upside down. You should also angle it so that it doesn't wear down or rub against clothes or the face. With a strapless or thin strapped dress, you can pin it lower down on the left of the waist.

Corsages can usually run from $10 to $40 from a local florist, or you can also order online. If you are buying a lot of wedding flowers, you may be able to get these thrown in as a freebie or a discount. It doesn't hurt to ask. Making your own can be an option as well. A silk flower version may also work if you have several formal engagements in a row. New arrangements every time can get expensive!

The wrist corsage has been gaining in popularity, as it doesn't require a pin hole through the dress. After all, a prom or wedding dress is often an expensive item. Also, it prevents a potential screwup with a nervous date and a sharp object, which is always a good thing. If you are the man, be sure to ask your date what color her dress is so you can match it with the flowers. Red roses with a green dress might get some Christmas comments!

Besides a prom evening, corsages are also common at weddings. Traditionally, the bride and groom's mothers and grandmothers wear a corsage to show their relationship. Girls making their Holy Communion or Bat Mitzvah may also wear one.
