The word boutonniere comes from the French word for buttonhole. You can consider it similar to a female's rose corsage. It is usually smaller sized than a corsage though, with only one or perhaps two small flowers. Its not meant to outsize the lady's accessories, especially on her wedding or prom night! Like a corsage, it should be worn pinned to the left high up on the lapel, although not so high as to block or rub against the face.

If you are looking to buy a rose boutonniere, you can get them from the local florist. They generally run from ten up to forty dollars for a top of the line creation. If you are ordering a lot of wedding flowers, you can see if you can get the corsages and boutonnieres thrown in or at least discounted. You can also get silk boutonnieres that can be reused, although they may look a little cheap. They also won't be scented. It can be a good alternative if someone is allergic to flowers though. It may be an option if you have several formal engagements in a row though. Perhaps there are several prom nights coming up, and for a high schooler, money can be tight! If you are artistically blessed, you can also make your own.

Make sure that the color scheme matches your suit if it is a prom celebration. The woman will get the boutonniere for her date, so she may want to know what he is wearing, if he tends to wear crazy colors! She may also want to choose something that matches her dress so that they can coordinate. A white rose is usually the safe bet.

If it is a wedding, it should definitely match the suit, as well as the overall decor of the wedding. Traditionally, the males in the groom's bridal party as well as the fathers of the soon to be wed couple wear them.
