Romantica Roses

Romantica roses are an interesting sort. Find out more about what these mean and where they are from.

Basically these are David Austin breeds, but grown in another country. Most are from France under the Meilland nursery name. They have a blend of characteristics of the English types, such as the great fragrance, but are generally shorter and more shrublike. They still often work well as cut flowers though.

Some American nurseries and growers may not have them expressly labeled, but may just lump them in with the other hybrids or call them just plain shrubs or floribundas. A good key as to whether or not its a Romantica is in the name. You'll notirce that Meilland has used lots of historical figures as names, such as Michelangelo and August Renoir. Lots of growers like them for their great scent. As they are smaller, they are often used in hedges or edges or gardens, rather than as the focal point. Some species can get up to six feet tall. Understand that these do best in more temperate climates, similar to that seen in France. Very hot or humid or tremendously cold spells can be tough on these beauties.

  • Johann Strauss
  • Bolero
  • Michelangelo

Some of my favorites for these types:

Elle

Has a very cool salmon color!

Romantica roses

Eden

A nice mix of white and pink! This is probably the most popular of all the Romanticas. You'll also find it called the Eden Climber, as it does quite well at that! There's also red and yellow versions but I believe they are more rare. Some gardeners have said they are a little high maintenance but its hard to deny their beauty.

Polka

A great looking apricot with a nice fragrance.

Many people also like the Yves Piaget, saying it has great blooms and fragrance. The Colette is also a very well regarded climber.
