Rock RoseThe rock rose is a great looking perennial for your garden! Its a low-cost easy addition that doesn't need a lot of care to look great! ![]() There is actually a whole family of Cistus plants that number almost two hundred species. You may also see it as the Pavonia lasiopetala. You'll find these shrubs most commonly in Europe around the Mediterranean region. However, it does appear in North America in the more arid areas such as the southwest. You'll often hear it refered to as the Texas rock rose. You'll also find some species in the mountainous regions of South America as well. They are a pretty flower, usually blooming in pink but sometimes yellow or white. They often congregate on sunny spots in rocky areas (hence the name) or other unshaded areas. Some Cistus are used for perfumes but they are generally not very fragrant. It will bloom from about June to September.
They are a gardener's favorite for a few reasons. One, they are very hardy. They are built to work in poor soils and are naturally drought resistant. If you are are the type to forget to water and fertilize, you've got your plant! Plus, they are often very cheap at the nursery as well. From a few feet away, people often mistake them for the true thing. They're a great "filler" plant. They usually only last a few seasons but they will seed and spread naturally if left in a decent environment. It should be grown in warmer areas, usually zones 7 and above, along with a drier climate.
