Peace RoseThe Peace Rose is a yellow blend hybrid tea rose. This is one of the most successful and popular roses in history. The rose was bred by Francis Meilland in France before 1939. It was introduced in the United States by Cornard Pyle in 1945 with the name ‘Peace’. The originator of the rose Mieilland contacted Field Marshall Alan Brook who played a major role in the Second World War for the liberation of France. Meilland expressed her wish to Alan Brook to grant his name to the rose. Alan refused and recommended the name of this rose should be ‘Peace’. It was on 29th April 1945 that the name Peace was publically announced by its introducing company. It is immensely popular, selling over 100 million in 1992.
This beautiful looking hybrid tea rose is yellow blend in color with the outward petals bearing delightful pink edges. The bloom of the flower ranges from being medium sized to large. The petal count in each bloom is around 40 to 45 petals. Average diameter is 6 inches. The bloom opens in cup shape with high center formation. The rose looks marvelous with fully double petal blooms that are slightly ruffled on the edges. This flower has a moderate to strong fragrance so keep that in mind when planting it. The shrub has tall upright growth and can easily attain the height of 6 feet. It spreads wide about 4 feet. The Shrub can be planted alone as a single tree or bush in the garden or in groups. It would add charm to any garden with its lovely blossoms and foliage which is dark green in color and glossy. It can be grown directly in your garden or in the container. The blooms start appearing on the rose plant from late spring and continue to bloom repeatedly until the fall. This long stemmed yellow beauty looks stunning cut as well as planted. The Peace rose is highly resistant to disease such as blackspots and mildews. The stems of the rose are moderately thorny. For best growth it should get full sunlight however it does survive in the partial shade. Of course, proper watering and well drained soil will help it to thrive as well. The winter hardiness of this rose is not very good, however. It is ideal to grow the Peace rose in USDA zones 5b and warmer. Another popular variety that is available is the Climbing Peace Rose. This variety is often considered the most beautiful of all climbing roses. The bicolor effect and the fragrance of this rose will adorn any trellis, walls, pillars and empty space of your garden and patio. The golden yellow color saturated over the petals with bright pink tips looks extravagant in any form in your garden. The climbing Peace Rose can be trained to climb 8 to 10 feet in height.
