Patio RosesPatio roses are a little niche of flowers that people in confined spaces or with decks would need. Learn more about these small beauties. The exact size of these can vary based on who you talk to. Generally, they go anywhere from eighteen inches to 30 inches in height. In any case, they are definitely smaller than the average bush! They've become more popular in recent years and many new types are bred specifically to thrive in containers. You can use tubs, containers, or pots to grow these. Realize that these plants are made to be outdoors. Just be sure that you pick flowers that are compatible with your gardening zone and you should be fine. What's great about these is that they will flower most of the summer without a whole lot of work. Leave about a foot and a half between plants. There are some varieties that have a nice scent, but in most cases you'll need to get a full-sized specimen to really get a good fragrance going. Most are bred to be tough against disease as well. Pruning usually is fairly minimal as long as you provide proper spacing. You should check with the nursery on information for the specific plant that you have for pruning information. If in doubt, March is a good time to do it. Cut back any dead pieces. Since its such a small plant, you really only need to leave 4-5 of the best, most spaced out canes. Some food is also a good idea at this point. If you want continuous blooming, consider another feeding in mid-summer, as well as a pruning of any dying blooms. Some of the better breeds I've seen: May get a little big (up to 36") but has great flowers. Can go nice with a more striking color.
