Long Stem Roses

Long stem roses have grown in popularity over the years. They are often associated with romantic celebrations like anniversaries and Valentine's Day, Learn more about these beautiful symbols of love!

Long stem roses today are usually hybrid tea roses that are bred specifically to have longer stems and sit better in water. They were originally created in the 19th century when Chinese roses were hybridized with old European species. This resulted in the characteristics we see today: long stems, large blooms that repeat, beautiful colors, and a fresh scent, in some cases. It won't be as fragrant as the old breeds though. Today many of these roses are grown in South America, particularly Ecuador. While they are not native to the region, the Ecuadorian climate is excellent for flower growing, especially these breeds. In addition to hybrid teas, you will also see long-stemmed floribundas and grandifloras as well.

Rigid stems help these flowers look great in an arrangement or in a vase, in a group or as a single. A typical length is anywhere from 60 to 90 centimeters, although 70cm appears to be more of the standard. If you have a specific vase in mind, be sure to verify the height as they can vary. This size and growth is why these breeds tend to be more expensive, as well as the fact that they are popular for romantic occasions.

You can grow your own but it takes extra effort for sure. It takes careful pruning and attention to nuture these plants. You need to consistently prune the branches and blossoms to emphasize the big blooms. Long stem roses also need plenty of water, up to 3 inches a week. They may also need additional fertilizer and soil care.
