Harkness Roses

Harkness roses are one of the oldest continuous breeders of roses in the world. Find out more about the variety and history of this British group.

They first went into the nursery business in 1879 in Yorkshire, England. The sons of the original founder quickly expanded the operations to southern fields and they began a program of breeding their own plants.

It was Jack Harkness who worked hard on the breeding end, extensively breeding and experimenting with hybrids. Peter focused on the operations, and the business grew rapidly in the post War period.

Today, they are still repeatedly winning awards. Their creations have won Gold Standard awards the last three years. Violet Cloud-2010 Simply Sally Susan Daniel 2009 Penny lane 2008

Unlike some other breeders, they will ship internationally, although only the bare roots and only to European countries. That makes them very tough to get over here in the states. Pickering Nurseries in Canada had a very deep supply but as of spring 2011 were not taking new orders. Roses Unlimited has a small supply of different types available. Heirloom and Edmunds also have a very limited selection. You may need to look at a grafted specimen in order to add these. Perhaps check with your local society or rosarians to see if they are in the know.

In the US, many people have liked the Lady Mitchell breed, which seems to be quite hardy and disease resistant.

Here are some other popular varieties:

Compassion

Many growers love its climbing traits. It has a great fragance, and can work as a cut flower in some cases, although Harkness is not generally known for that.

Easy Going

Its also known as being very tough on diseases. Has great yellow blooms.
