The Hansa rose is one tough shrub! Its a great pick for people in colder climates, like me!

History

The background on this flower is a little spotty. Its originally of Dutch origin and was first unveiled in 1905. The breeder was Schauman van Tol. I'm not sure how it was ultimately named the Hansa though, it doesn't seem to be a Dutch word.

Beauty

These flowers have big blooms that vary from purple to a more magenta color. It does have a nice fragrance that is almost spicy. It will bloom repeatedly throughout the summer and even into the autumn. It blooms early and then late. Keep an eye on the late fall blooms. It produces huge rose hips, much like other Rugosa roses, that can be used for recipes.

This plant is rated from zone 3 to 9. Yes that's zone 3! Its known as a great winter hardy rose. It will get up to six feet high with steady growth. You'll see it as a garden border or corner shrub in gardens. Its tough against diseases as well.
