Freeze Dried Rose PetalsFreeze dried rose petals are a good alternative to going fresh. Its a cheaper and often more convenient way to go. Making Can you make these yourself? Sure, if you have a freeze drier that's capable of reaching -30 F. You'll also need a vacuum pump to suck out the air. It also takes about two weeks for the entire process. So, the bottom line is, most of us just don't have the equipment or time to adequately do this. Longetivity One of the main advantages to going freeze dried is that they last much longer than fresh. They can easily last for months. However, they will turn more pale over time. The best bet is to use them within a month or so of receiving them. Note that you DON'T need to keep them frozen. Scent Unfortuneatly, the process of extreme cold really kills off any fragrance that the flowers once had. Look into adding some oil to improve the process. Freshen You can re-moisturize dried petals to an extent. The best methods are to leave in a bathroom with a hot shower running for 20 minutes or so. You can also use a humidifier. Its especially beneficial for darker colors. However, understand that it may not get the same texture as fresh. Too much moisture can make them soggy though. Other Notes If you are looking to have petals float in water, its generally better to get fresh petals. The water can affect the freeze dried areas. Also, don't try to order dyed colors such as blue or black. These will tend to stain and run over time, not the best thing for your event.
