Freedom Hedge Rose

The freedom hedge rose is one of the nicest border varieties that are available.  There are a couple different looks available so it can fit into most gardens.

Rose, Hedge Freedom Pink

This is also known as the Rosa Freedom, they seem to have many of the same nice properties of the Knockouts.  They’ve been specifically bred to be disease tough, and offer a lot of blooms with thick green foliage and leaves. As the name suggests, they are a good choice for a border flower.  You can expect them to get up to 6 feet but 4-5 feet is more likely, with a 3 ft base.  They can be planted closer together for a tougher border.  They do have some thorns but are not the worst to deal with, so if you are looking for a big thorny , “intruder stopper” there might be better options.

They come in a nice pink and a deeper red color.  Both of them have a nice mild fragrance.  Although they have nice blooms and a scent, they aren’t the best for a cut flower.  The stems can be a little scraggy for that.  You will get repeated blooms from the beginning of summer through fall.  Not only do they repeat, but there are numerous blooms as well.  It’s a very full looking shrub.

Rose, Hedge Freedom Red

It’s a good choice for a beginners.  They have a good amount of leeway for when you “mis-water” them or forget altogether.  They are very disease and insect resistant.  You’ll need some winter protection for these in the tougher climates though, like zones 5-6.  Its rated to go all the way to zone 10 so it can handle the heat, but just pay attention to provide more water to it.  It does best with full sun, so try to get these out in the unshaded areas of your lawn or garden to get the best angle.
