Eden RoseThe Eden rose is a great pink climber. Its also known as the Meilland rose or the Pierre De Ronsard rose. Its also often labeled under the Romantica breeds as well. History With its big huge blooms, many people think that this is an antique or old rose. However, it was actually introduced in 1987 by Meilland, a French breeder. They named it the Pierre De Ronsard after a noted French poet from the 16th century. That's still the French name although American versions are called the Eden rose. It was voted into the Roses Hall of Fame in 2006. Beauty As mentioned before, this rose has an old-fashioned look with the huge round blooms. The flowers are actually more white than pink but it really gets its color from the pink centers. Its gaining in popularity as a bouquet rose and for celebrations. They look great in many places where climbers thrive, especially doorways and arches, like in the picture below. It can also be grown as a shrub as well. Unlike some of the antiques, it does not have a great strong fragrance, in fact, I could barely notice it at all.
Gardening Its rated from zone 5 and up but the word is they can be tough to work with. I've heard reports of them being susceptible to extreme heat, but they do seem to be fairly winter hardy. It will bloom repeatedly and it is known to be disease and blackspot resistant.
