A bit of history…

The 1900s is considered the boom time of rose hybridization. As the cold war ended people resumed their usual way of life and wanted to add color into their lives. During this period, renowned companies as well as amateur gardeners experimented with hybridization which produced quite a number of high quality roses; out of which the hybrid tea roses began to gain much popularity. Double Delight is essentially a mix of two hybrid tea roses - Granada and Garden Party. Two breeders, Herbert C. Swim & Arnold W. Ellis had mastered the hybrid teas during the 1970s and trialed with the aforementioned hybrids to create this masterpiece in 1977. Owing to its great popularity, the double delight was included into the Rose Hall of Fame in 1985.

The beauty

Simply put, Double Delight is one of the most popular roses in the world. The eye catching quality of this rose comes from the vibrant red and white contrasting shades and striped look of its blossoms. During the initial stages, the blossoms are almost plain white. Towards maturity a red hue starts to develop on the edges of the petals changing into a cherry red as it moves towards the centre of the flower. This “red-spread” is controlled by the amount and nature of ultra-violet light falling on the rose and is a clear sign that it favors the hot climates. The blossoms are relatively large and blooms up mostly as single flowers, however it is not uncommon to find two or three blossoms at the end of a sturdy stem. The fragrance of these amazing blossoms are not to be unnoticed which depending on who you talk to can be called either “spicy” or “fruity”.  The plant blooms repeatedly from spring through fall and creates a dazzling sight in any garden. The statement "more the merrier" is proved right when it comes to the Double Delight.

Gardening

The leaves of the Double Delight rose are quite large and the bush has an upright posture. Growing to a height of around 3- 5ft and a spread with a width of 2-3ft, the double delight thrives beautifully in warm climates. Plant two or three together to show the different color patterns that can occur across the floweres. Seek the sunniest locations in your gardens to grow the rose as the blossoms display their optimum color in a healthy dose of sunlight. They are normally disease resistant, but cool damp weather has adverse effects on the plant especially being susceptible to powdery mildew. The Double Delight rosecan liven up flowerbeds, mixed borders and its climbing variety decorates anything within its reach. They look great in a vase.
