Dortmund RoseThe Dortmund rose is a great looking red climber! Read on to find out more about this German flower.
Into the history books…. This rose was first bred in Germany by Kordes in 1955. It was named after the German city. It started to get popular in the 1960s and reached a peak point in 1971, winning the Portland Gold Medal. Beauty The first thing you'll notice on these are the large bright red flowers. They have a light colored center which really makes the red shine. It has only a light fragrance though. It has long canes and its best suited for a pillar or wall, but can look very nice on arches as well. They will start blooming in mid-summer and will often continue to the fall. Blooms will be continuous. Gardening This rose is rated from zones 4 - 8 or 9, depending on who you ask. It seems to do better in temperate climates. Its best planted where it can get full sunshine. This rose is quite thorny. It also grows fast, so make sure to leave plenty of room on your pillar or wall so its not getting in the way. Deadheading will definitely help the blooms. If you are growing it as a climbing rose, train the branches laterally to encourage more shoot growth.
