Black Rose Tattoo

A black rose tattoo is a very popular ink design! I often get questions or requests for sketches or images for this type.

This design tends to be more popular with men. Most women prefer the traditional red or pink. For men, its usually an arm tattoo. For women, it varies from the upper back, ankle, lower back, or sometimes chest.

Some tattoo afficiandos aren't as fond as black roses as it obviously doesn't have the color splash of a red or pink design. Black roses are traditionally used to convey death or darkness. Keep that in mind when you are at the parlor! You might save a couple bucks by not using colors but be sure you're ready to explain the meaning of your design!

However, in certain cultures, such as Ireland, the black rose is seen as a mark of rebellion. This was a take on a traditional English symbol, the red rose, that was twisted around in a rebellious way. Its a very common addition to designs such as the Celtic cross or compass.

Some designs incorporate visible thorns as well. This can help convey a sense of adversity or overcoming the odds to succeed or find beauty.
