Black Magic Roses

Black magic roses are mysterious and always draw questions. Like all black varieties, it is really a very dark red or burgundy color. They are relatively modern, and are great for starting a conversation in your home!

Into the history books…

The rose was bred by Evers and was introduced in the year 1997 by Rosen Tantau breeding company. The birth place of the rose is Germany. The rose was created by crossing pollinating the breeds of Red Velvet rose and Dallas.

The beauty…

This enchanting rose is sometimes thought of as a symbol of departure and farewell. However they have become recently popular in wedding flower arrangements and bridal bouquet to express deep love and emotion. The rose appears black in the bud form and opens up into enchanting dark garnet colored petals. Black Magic rose looks very appealing with deep red velvety petals. The petals are thick and fully doubled. The bloom of the rose appears singly on each stem making it very attractive as cut flower. Each bloom is 5 to 5.5 cm in diameter and has 30 to 35 petals. The bloom period of the rose if from late spring and the blooms are repeated throughout the season. The foliage of the rose is beautiful and dark green. The rose bears a mild but noticeable perfume. The shrub grows to a height of 4 to 6 feet and width of 36 to 48 inches. When placed under dim lights the Black Magic roses appear truly black.

Gardening

If you are planting Black magic roses then be prepared for intensive care. They do well in warmer areas but are very weak in the colder climates, the winter hardiness of the rose being from USDA zone 6 to 10. Proper care and pruning will result in good growth of the plant. The rose requires full sun and proper ventilated conditions. The soil where the rose is planted needs to be fully drained; pH requirement of the soil is 5.6 to 6 and acidic. Regular doses of fertilizer every summer season will help the rose to thrive. Deep and regular watering of the rose is very important. Spring season pruning is required to enhance new blooms on the new woods. This will also enhance the fresh air circulation to the inner parts of the plant. Despite the heavier work needed, they are also known to have a nice vase life.
