American Beauty RoseThe American Beauty rose is a nice looking pink hybrid tea rose, although it can be tough to find. Find out more about this pink perpetual!
Into the history books…. This flower was first bred in France by a breeder named Henri Ledechaux back in 1875. The French version of this is called the Mme Ferdinand Jamain. It was brought over to the United States the next year by George Bancroft. Over the years there has been some confusion over the naming on this plant. Many of the breeds labeled "American Beauty" in stores may in fact be a version of the Ulrich Brunner. This variety has been known to have issues with viruses. Definitely check before you purchase! One way to tell is the fact that Ulrich Brunners have smooth stems while the American Beauty is definitely thorny. Beauty One of the big selling points with this flower is its frequent repeat blooming. Its definitely very consistent. It has nice long stems and a really great fragrance. Its ideal for cut roses. It will grow from about 3 feet up to seven feet or so.
Gardening As mentioned above, one drawback with this plant is it is relatively weak against diseases. This includes mildew, rust, blackspot, and other viruses and fungus. It does require regular feeding and cut backs to grow well. Its not the best breed for beginners who want a hands-off plant. It can grow in potted plants or containers if they are big enough. The American Beauty rose is rated from zones 6-10, and definitely does better in the warmer climates.
